Despite having only two regulars back from last year’s varsity, the girls’ tennis team opened the new season with a decisive 6-1 win over Tollgate. Playing at #1 singles, junior Candice B, the reigning state champion, cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Tollgate’s Sabrina Dengel. Freshman Kylie E, making her debut at #2 singles, also won handily, 6-1, 6-0, over Mackenzie Blackmer. At #3 singles, senior co-captain Natalie S lost 1-6, 6-3, 10-7 to Svetlana Stepanova (the third set was a super tiebreaker as the match outcome had already been decided). And at #4 singles, senior co-captain Liv M, playing her first ever match at singles, also prevailed, defeating Bethany Prendergast 6-1, 6-2.
None of the six doubles players were varsity regulars last year, and all of them won in their first matches at the varsity level. Playing at #1 doubles, junior Vibha K and sophomore Maddy G lost the first game and then eased to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Isabella Martinez and Kerrin Li. At #2 doubles, senior Courtney Y and freshman Frances A beat Julia Mathews and Morgan Glick 6-4, 6-0, and at #3 doubles, senior Emelie L and junior Celia Y defeated Emily Foss and Gianna Armstrong 6-0, 6-2.
